AAA predicts more people will travel in the US  this Labor Day Weekend than on any since 2008.

Decoded Science predicts there will be a record number of barbecues.

There’s a grand slam tennis tournament; the Major League Baseball season enters its final month.

And surfers get a bonus from departing hurricanes.

Will the weather cooperate?

The General Weather Pattern

The violent weather that plagued the center of the US during late spring and much of the summer has abated.

This is a seasonal occurrence. The lower layers of the atmosphere cool faster than upper levels as the sun’s angle decreases; the result is a more stable atmosphere (cold below, warm above is stable).

Though some parts of the country will experience showers and even some thunderstorms, the weather looks good for most areas this weekend.

The exception will be the northern plains and upper midwest, where a cold front will cause unsettled conditions and cold temperatures.

The hot weather will continue in the south and southeast, with forays into the midwest and northeast. But the heat doesn’t have the sultry effect of July, when the sun is much higher in the noon sky.

Hurricanes Cristobal and Marie: Surfin’ USA

Hurricane Cristobal

Hurricane Cristobal in the Atlantic and former Hurricane Marie in the Pacific, though far from land, will provide excellent surfing waves as far south as the mid-Atlantic and as far north as Santa Barbara. If you don’t have a board, body surfing will be great, too.

The best surfing waves occur when storms are far away: The longest wavelengths endure the journey best, move fastest, and provide the longest, fastest, most consistent rides.

Tennis Grand Slam Event

U.S. Open Tennis Tournament, New York City, ongoing until September 7.

The days of the middle rounds are often the best time to visit this major tennis tournament at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center. Crowds are not as big as for the final weekend; spectators can get close to the action.

Weather: Temperatures will rise to the upper 80s by Labor Day; there will be a chance of a shower each day. The hot weather will not be oppressive enough to affect the play.

Decoded Science’s Major League Baseball Pick Of The Week

Cincinnati Reds @ Pittsburgh Pirates, Saturday, 4 p.m.

The Reds are neck-and-neck with Milwaukee for first place in the National League Central Division. The Pirates are chasing several teams for a playoff spot. The pitching matchup is between two good ones and Decoded Science predicts a tight pitcher’s duel.

Alfredo Simon takes the mound for the Reds; his record of 13-8 makes him the 7th winningest pitcher in the National League.

Vance Worley goes for Pittsburgh; he has pitched well since being brought up in the middle of the season, though he has lost his last three starts due to lack of run support.

Weather: The warm air will make a brief appearance in western Pennsylvania on Saturday, with the temperature hitting the upper 80s; a thunderstorm is likely, but the game should be completed.

Festivals Galore To End The Summer

Since there’s an extra day to the weekend, there’s one more day for festivals. Decoded Science picks some interesting events to highlight each week. Look for ones in your neighborhood.

Wild West Air Fest, Steamboat Springs, CO, Saturday and Sunday

Planes doing crazy stunts. It’s Colorado, so spectators and pilots can both get high.

Weather: The weather will be nice, so bring a lunch and have a picnic while you watch. Temperatures in the 70s with just a slight chance of a shower.

Pioneer Days Festival, Cartersville, GA, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday

Arts & Crafts, Rides & Games, Fireworks & Food. When you see how people lived in the 18th century, you’ll appreciate your 21st century life.

Weather: About as seasonal as you can get. Temperature in the upper 80s with a chance of a thunderstorm.

Greenbelt Labor Day Festival, Greenbelt, MD, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday

This is the 60th year of this festival between Washington and Baltimore. It has virtually everything from food to entertainment, culminating with a parade.

Weather: the first two days will be seasonably warm — in the low 80s. Then the southern heat will move in and the temperature could hit 90. A stray thunderstorm is possible each day.

66th Annual Choctaw Nation Labor Day Festival, Choctaw, Oklahoma, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday

The best of Native American culture: games, rides, concerts, sports.

Weather: The heat wave goes on in the south and central plains. Temperatures in the 90s with a chance of a thunderstorm.

It’s A Weekend In Europe, Too

Labor Day is uniquely American, but Europeans will be off on a frenzied attempt to salvage one more summer vacation weekend.

The warmth that was interrupted last week has returned to most of the continent, and the Riviera should be packed with swimmers and sunbathers in attire considered risqué by American standards.

Summer Weather: Just Enjoy

It’s the last true weekend of summer wherever you are in the northern hemisphere, so get the most out of it, whether you attend a festival, go to the beach, or just watch sports on the tube. What’s happening in your home town?
