A US Navy F-18 Hornet crashed in the residential area of Virginia at 16:08 GMT, in an apartment complex where 40 apartments units were damaged/destroyed. No fatalities reported as yet.
The US Navy jet crashed 2.2 miles from the runway of Naval air station Oceana. The jet, piloted by a student pilot in the front, and an experienced instructor pilot at the back, was reported to be conducting flight without any live ordinance.
What Happened in the F-18 Crash?
The F-18 Super Hornet is a fighter jet made by Boeing. The Super Hornet crashed immediately after takeoff and the two pilots ejected at a very low altitude, as per the witness accounts. the witnesses also relate that:
- There was a shower of fuel just before the airplane hit the ground.
- The nose of the aircraft was up, and its tail was down.
- The aircraft was tilted towards the right.
- There were sounds coming from the engine.
