Three months of Apple customers being lost without Google Maps after the iOS 6 update have passed, and they finally have it back.

Google released Maps for the iPhone on December 13, 2012.

Users were so happy that it hit the top of the most downloaded app from the iTunes app store.

Apple’s Apology and Job Losses

Apple opted to cut its partnership with Google in September 2012, after releasing iOS 6 and the iPhone5.

It created its own map software which proved to be inferior, leading to people losing their way and finding that they were not always in the right city!

The map software also lacked some of the features that were so popular with the Google software.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, issued a formal apology to users and even suggested that they use Google Maps through the Safari browser on the phone.

Google Listening to the People

Google announced that it was working on a Google Maps app shortly after realizing that customers wanted it. In fact, they started working on this app before Apple’s decision to cut Google from the iPhone. This was at the same time that Nokia also announced that it would be working on their map app, Here, which was available to customers in November 2012.

Google Maps for Mobile director Daniel Graf stated, “Starting today, we’re pleased to announce that Google Maps is here – rolling out across the world in the Apple App Store. It’s designed from the ground up to combine the comprehensiveness and accuracy of Google Maps with an interface that makes finding what you’re looking for faster and easier.
